Specialist Positions

Our Summer Camp Specialists provide instruction and support in their special area; Arts & Crafts, STEAM, Aquatics, Music & Drama, etc.

Your role revolves around creating an inclusive and vibrant environment for campers. You will work with all age groups through a block schedule system and schedule activities and maintain the safety of your station.

We actively seek candidates who represent the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our campers.

Position Description

Job Title: Summer Camp Counselor

Reports to: Camp Directors

Supervisees: Campers, Counselors in Training, and Junior Counselors

  • Sterling House Community Center, Inc. (SHCC) is seeking dynamic camp leaders for another summer of fun in the sun. These individuals will be enthusiastic, optimistic, and excited to work with kids. These individuals must be resourceful, reliable, compassionate, and responsive.

  • -Works under the direction of Camp Director(s) and designated staff as part of the camp team

    -Meets and greets the children’s parents/guardians and builds a positive relationship with each

    -Prepares all paperwork needed by administration including Attendance Cards, Lunch Cards, Field Trip forms, sunscreen forms and applications, and any necessary medication tracking.

    -Implements ice-breaker and group-building activities on the first day of each session to ensure that the group becomes a community, and repeats as necessary.

    -Provides clear verbal direction and instructions in an outdoor environment. Can participate fully in all events and activities.

    -Is responsible to plan, lead, participate in, and assist with activities in assigned areas.

    -Ensures the health and safety of his/her campers by applying sunscreen applications on the children approved by parents, ensuring hand washing before every meal, proper eating habits, and hydration.

    -Supervises all assigned aspects of the campers’ day including Morning Meeting, End-of-Day Meeting, all time slots, mealtime and activities.

    -Manages the behavior of his/her campers, especially regarding physical, emotional, or verbal abuse of others. No bullying allowed.

    -Able to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.

    -Provides opportunities for discussion of individual campers or the whole group together of any problems or concerns within the group.

    -Operates their assigned area during scheduled times and directly supervises behavior and activities of the campers and the participation of JC’s and CIT’s assigned.

    -Assures that campers are signed out only by approved people designated by enrollment paperwork or notes sent in by parents/guardians.

    -Supports the coordination of various camp-wide activities with other counselors.

  • -Create and maintain a safe and inclusive environment that encourages physical, emotional, and social growth and positive character development in children with a variety of abilities and disabilities.

    -Embody the values and mission of SHCC in all professional interactions and work to promote it in the community.

    -Work to increase his/her own cultural competence while creating an environment that values diversity, equity and inclusion.

    -Maintain positive relationships with children, families, and other staff while serving as an exemplary role model to all staff and students in personal language, appearance, and professionalism.

    -Maintain confidentiality with respect to any/all staff or family issues

    -Other duties as requested or assigned by camp directors.

  • -Age 18 and over and/or a graduate from High School. Currently enrolled in higher education or has graduated.

    -Possess a strong work ethic and ability to take initiative

    -Desire and ability to work with young people in a camp setting

    -Good moral character while serving as a good example in personal language, appearance, and health habits

    -Able to make responsible decisions for the health and safety of your campers

    -Strong communication skills with the ability to accept feedback and guidance

    -Previous experience in a leadership training program at our camp or equivalent camp experience

    -Committed to working with a diverse staff and camper population for the fulfillment of Sterling House Camp’s goals

  • -This is a seasonal position beginning in June until the end of August. Training hours will begin in late May in the evenings.

    -Camp hours are Monday through Friday 8:45am - 3:30pm with opportunity to work before and after camp care.
